Old Vows

“Breath of Life” by Florence + The Machine

Rayven: May 8th, 3020

There is a sense of warmth in a place that should be cold and uninviting. Through the darkness, with Whisperers floating through hollow ears, she comes to me in the form of life that meets death. Her skin drinks the warmth of summer faeries, but her hair is as dark as the midnight sea. The Nameless Faerie has ancient eyes that have seen many years—life itself. The first blooming rose… no… the first signs of life growing from the soil.

She has been through it all.

The Nameless Faerie kneels beside me. Her black dress flows with glistening stars. Dark hair twists, covering the horns on either side of her head that tilt downwards, curving near her pointed, twitching ears. Jewels’ gleam rose red across the hair that coils around her horns. I have never seen a faerie with horns. Although, if she has horns, she must be a creature in faerie form.

Yes.

The Nameless faerie is a creature I took a deal with. This is likely what she does to survive. I am her host, but all she asks is for me to take the faeries I kill to the lifestream.

Strange.

“I see you are without your sword,” she says, and her words are soft-spoken. Almost a whisper in my ear. “If someone does not aid you soon, you will die.”

My hitched breaths shatter. Hyperventilating breaths rise and lower at the pounding of my heart. The shudder of a finger causes my neck to twitch to the right, and my shoulder becomes rigid and stiff. My toes curl at the pain, and straining in my legs tenses as if I pulled an unfortunate muscle. I blink, but they are slow, as if I am struggling to fight sleep.

Pain. Insufferable, horrific pain. And it will not go away. I am losing my breath like I have lost my breath the day King Aerio shot an arrow through my chest.

The Nameless faerie scoops my hand up in hers and rests her other hand over the top. “I will stay with you until your time passes.”

Warmth floods through from where she holds me. The softness holds across her face when she closes her eyes and hums a lullaby. It is sweet and filled with longing. I can imagine the Nameless Faerie standing in a valley of wildflowers, but as she reaches for them, they decay before a finger can graze the colourful petals. A deep sadness overwhelms me, penetrating my heart with another pain that burrows within without peeling at the flesh.

While she sings, the Whisperers float around us in a circular motion. They sing too. It causes my eyes to close and go into this dreamlike state. I am floating in the air, but it feels like water. Floating or falling. Now, I cannot tell the difference.

I have accepted my fate when something strange happens. Before my eyes can close and for the darkness to sweep over me, light shines brightly. A new sense of warmth that causes a searing pain like putting a hand in a fire pierces my chest.
